Old Age Home in Mumbai: A Caring Community for Seniors

Addressing India's Aging Crisis

India has an elderly population of more than 100 million. Out of this population, millions are increasingly living in difficult situations. This is caused by various socioeconomic reasons. The result is the growing number of old-age homes in our country. The concept of these old-age homes in our country is entirely new, therefore, the people living there are also facing many difficulties. One of the major problems that arise in old age is health. Different illnesses cause different health complications, which in turn increase the financial and economic problems of the elderly. This is the reason behind the focus of Sadguru Foundation on old-age issues. Let us go through the different initiatives our NGO has taken to tackle this problem.

Medical Initiatives for the Elderly

As a person ages, so does the increase in their health issues. In our society, joint families used to be the cornerstone of our family structure. But with changing social norms and economic conditions in our country, the dynamic between elderly people and their children is fast changing. One of the most important positive aspects of the previous generations was being able to help with the health issues of their elder parents. These days, as older people live alone without any economic support, their lives get harder day by day. Therefore, to help these gentle souls, our NGO has carried out medical drives to help them cope with their health issues. During these drives, elderly people facing different health issues are given medical support. We also carry out medical help drives for other organizations supporting these people. For example, last year, Sadguru Foundation helped an organization that shelters a group of destitute elders. This organisation not only provides medical support for these people but also makes sure their basic daily needs are being met. But last year, due to various reasons, the organization was unable to meet its medical needs. Therefore, during that time, Sadguru Foundation carried out a medical drive for them and helped them with their needs.

Providing Nourishment

Food is the most important requirement of the human body. For the elderly population, who are living a hand-to-mouth existence, food can sometimes become a luxury they cannot afford. This can cause severe problems for the elderly and worsen their already fragile health, which in turn can cause more medical issues. Therefore, our NGO has started different food distribution initiatives to handle this problem. Our volunteers start the drive by packing nutritious meals for the elderly. The meals are then distributed to the most vulnerable elders in our society. This drive was essential during the COVID-19 epidemic. During the pandemic, most of the population of our country was in lockdown. During those times, the elderly population, living alone and without any financial support, suffered the most. Therefore, even in the middle of the pandemic, our volunteers made sure to distribute these healthy meals to the needy elderly population of our country. Our meals consisted of the healthy diet necessary for the elderly to sustain their deficiencies in their daily meals. These drives ensure that not only do the elderly stay healthy, but they are also able to take care of themselves in a better way.

Ration Distribution Initiative

Nutritional deficiency is the major reason for the health issues of the elderly. For the elderly people living alone and in poor condition, this adds to their challenges. This can also lead to the malnourishment of these individuals, which can further lead to more health complications. If the situation is not looked after, this can also lead to serious consequences. This is where the novel idea of ration distribution was born in Sadguru Foundation. We decided to distribute the essential ration to the elderly population in need, which can help them decrease their nutrition deficiency and lead to healthy lives in their golden years. Our ration distribution consists of essential items such as wheat, rice, sugar, and other pulses. These items are specially chosen to boost these individuals' nutrition and keep malnutrition at bay. Our volunteers carry out these ration distribution drives at regular intervals at different places. These make sure the elderly are being taken care of at different places. Their smiles and affection are the reason we can carry out these drives to the best of our abilities.

Conclusion

In our country, the elderly population is increasing day by day, so the need for their proper care rises too. This is the reason for the increase in old-age homes in India. This statistic is especially true for old-age homes in major cities like Delhi, Chennai, Noida, Gurgaon, Pune, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Delhi NCR. To meet this requirement and to be able to help these individuals, our NGO is making the best efforts. Support our initiatives to give relief to these people in their golden years.
